About Us

My name is Heather Devine.  I started Red Cedar Communications to combine my two passions in life—writing and the environment.  For the past ten years, I have done writing and editing for a variety of organizations and individuals, including publishing houses, marketing organizations, and nonprofits.  My projects have included editing manuscripts and web copy, grant writing, writing/editing press releases and brochures, writing a study guide for a book manuscript, and writing an annual report for the Orcas Island Public Library.  I enjoy variety in my work, and I have a forceful but flexible style.

I am a story-teller.  I believe in stories.  I believe in the power of words.  For that reason I spent two years earning a Master’s in Fine Arts in nonfiction from Bennington College, which has one of the most well-respected writing programs in the United States.  For two years I studied how to make facts engaging, how to make details exciting.  I believe that all forms of writing are a form of storytelling, from advertisements to newsletters, from grants to annual reports.  All forms of writing seek to connect the reader with the subject in a way that is forceful and persuasive.  My two years of study, combined with my ten years of writing experience, make me uniquely skilled as a communicator.

Clients of Red Cedar Communications receive one more benefit—passion.  I believe there is no issue more necessary, more pressing, than the health of the earth; for the earth is the one thing we cannot live without.  My mission in Red Cedar Communications is to save the earth by telling stories—your stories.  Red Cedar Communications exists as a communications resource for organizations dedicated to environmental and agricultural issues.  Through grants, newsletters, annual reports, press releases, and any other kind of writing, I tell your story.  I communicate what you are doing; what you need; why it’s important; and why your supporters, your community, or your customers need to be involved.  I forward your mission and your goals.  It’s your story.  Make it loud.
